High Schoolers Lead ‘Project Saakshar’ to Educate India’s Underprivileged Children

In an inspiring example of youth-driven change, a group of high school students from Karnal, Haryana, have launched Project Saakshar — a student-led initiative dedicated to improving educational access for underprivileged children across India.

Founded by Class 12 students Manya Bhatia and Devam Vaid, the project began as a small neighbourhood literacy drive and has since grown into a national movement with over 300 volunteers and a reach spanning 20 cities. The group has already supported more than 1,000 children through creative teaching, peer mentoring, and community-based learning sessions.

“Education should be exciting and inclusive, not a privilege,” said co-founder Manya. “Our goal is to make learning joyful for every child, no matter their background.”

Project Saakshar’s volunteers conduct reading circles, distribute learning kits, and organise “Selfie with Mentee” campaigns to build mentorship bonds and raise awareness. The initiative also partners with NGOs and corporations to extend its reach to slum communities and government schools.

The project’s growing success underscores a powerful trend of youth-led civic engagement in India — where students are using innovation and empathy to bridge educational inequalities.
