In an unusual show of protest, students of a government primary school in Raipur locked the school premises this week, demanding the appointment of regular teachers after months of staff absenteeism. The incident highlights the persistent teacher shortage and administrative lapses in several rural and semi-urban schools across Chhattisgarh.
According to reports in The Times of India, the students—joined by some parents—alleged that classes were frequently suspended due to the absence of regular teaching staff, leaving their education severely disrupted. They claimed that only temporary or visiting teachers were managing the school on an irregular basis.
Local education officials reached the spot and assured the students that teachers would be deputed immediately and a formal inquiry into the matter has been initiated. The administration also promised to ensure regular monitoring of teacher attendance in all government schools within the district.
“The protest by students reflects their growing awareness about their right to education and quality learning,” said an education activist from Raipur.
Teacher shortages remain a chronic issue in many parts of India, particularly in rural schools, where vacancies, transfers, and absenteeism have hindered learning outcomes despite multiple recruitment drives.
