CBSE Launches Eco-Club Initiative to Promote Sustainability and Green Innovation in Schools

New Delhi | November 10, 2025

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has launched a nationwide Eco-Club initiative to encourage environmental awareness, sustainability, and creative green practices among school students. The initiative aims to cultivate a generation of environmentally conscious citizens through experiential learning and community-driven projects.

According to a report by The Times of India, the Eco-Club programme will serve as a platform for students to design and implement projects related to waste management, energy conservation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable living. Schools affiliated with CBSE will be encouraged to set up dedicated student-led clubs to plan activities, conduct awareness drives, and collaborate with local authorities or NGOs for community impact.

The Board emphasised that the initiative will not only promote environmental stewardship but also integrate education for sustainable development (ESD) into mainstream school learning. It aligns with Indiaโ€™s commitments under the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 on climate action and SDG 4.7 on education for sustainability.

Participating schools will be encouraged to adopt creative strategies โ€” such as recycling art projects, green audits, and climate innovation challenges โ€” to inspire action among students. CBSE also plans to recognise exemplary Eco-Clubs through certificates and showcase opportunities at national-level events.

The Boardโ€™s move comes at a time when schools across India are increasingly taking up climate literacy and sustainability projects to prepare students for global environmental challenges.

More details and implementation guidelines for the Eco-Club initiative are available on the CBSE Academic portal.
