The Karnataka government has begun the recruitment process for 18,000 teachers across the state to address long-standing vacancies in public schools, Education Minister Madinahalli Madhu Bangarappa announced on Sunday.
According to the minister, the drive covers primary and high school levels under the Department of School Education and Literacy and aims to improve teacher–student ratios, especially in rural and backward districts. The recruitment is being conducted through a transparent, merit-based system that includes written examinations and document verification, following the Karnataka Teachers Recruitment Rules.
As reported by The Times of India, the state has faced a significant shortage of teachers due to retirements and unfilled posts over recent years. The new recruitment initiative is part of the government’s broader education reform strategy, which includes upgrading school infrastructure, strengthening digital classrooms, and enhancing teacher training.
Minister Bangarappa said the state is committed to ensuring that “no classroom remains without a qualified teacher,” adding that priority will be given to Kannada-medium and rural schools where shortages are most acute. He also noted that the recruitment process is expected to be completed in phases over the next few months, with new teachers joining before the 2026 academic year.
The Education Department is also exploring measures to introduce subject-specific appointments, particularly in mathematics, science, and English — areas where rural schools often face acute staffing gaps.
