The Indian government has demonstrated a sustained, high-level commitment to scaling up its flagship higher education institutions, viewing them as central pillars for driving Research, technological innovation, and national development. This is evidenced by the massive growth in both the number of premier institutions and the financial resources allocated for their expansion.
Since 2014, the country has witnessed a remarkable increase in the number of Institutes of Technology (IITs), growing from 16 to 23, and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), which expanded from 13 to 21. Similarly, new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have been established across various regions.
Strategic Investment and Capacity Building
This expansion is underpinned by significant financial outlay, with over ₹11,828 crore (approximately $1.42 billion USD) sanctioned exclusively for infrastructure development across these premier institutions. The strategy behind this investment is multifaceted:
- Boosting Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER): The primary goal is to substantially increase the capacity of the highest-quality institutions, making world-class education accessible to a larger segment of the population and contributing to the NEP 2020 target of a higher national GER.
- Fostering World-Class Research: By providing state-of-the-art laboratories, research centers, and academic facilities, the government aims to elevate the quality and quantity of Research output, positioning these institutions to compete effectively on the global stage. This directly supports the nation’s goals in Science & Tech and Innovation.
- Decentralization and Equity: The establishment of new IITs, IIMs, and AIIMS in geographically diverse locations helps to decentralize educational excellence, creating new regional hubs for talent and ensuring greater Equity & Diversity in access to premier institutions across different states.
This sustained focus on Innovation in Leadership and infrastructure development confirms the government’s recognition of premier educational institutions as essential economic drivers, vital for supplying highly skilled professionals and boosting the nation’s Workforce Readiness and global competitiveness.
