India pushes rice exports after record harvest

What happened:
Following a stronger-than-expected monsoon and a bump in production, India’s rice exporters are making a strategic push into emerging international markets. According to the Indian Rice Exporters Federation, exports are being targeted at countries like Iraq, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia after domestic warehouses overflow with stock.
The country produced an estimated 146.1 million tons in the crop year ending June 2025, while domestic demand is around 120.7 million tons.

Why it matters:

  • This can help boost India’s agricultural export earnings and support rural incomes.
  • It signals that India is leveraging favourable harvests to expand its global trade footprint.
  • There are implications for supply-chain, warehousing and pricing—both domestically and for export markets.
  • It could slightly ease pressure on domestic storage and logistics infrastructure.
