Jamaica has declared a national emergency after Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, battered the island on Tuesday night with sustained winds reaching 185 mph (295 km/h). The storm caused catastrophic flooding, toppled power lines, and left over 500,000 people without electricity across several parishes including St Elizabeth and Manchester.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness appealed for international assistance as relief teams battled blocked roads and collapsed bridges. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warned that Melissa could become the worst storm to strike Jamaica this century. The hurricane is now moving northwest toward eastern Cuba, where authorities have begun mass evacuations.
