In a major push to strengthen digital learning infrastructure, the Tamil Nadu School Education Department has announced plans to establish 6,672 new smart classrooms across 5,322 government schools, along with 2,236 hi-tech labs in 2,232 schools by the 2026โ27 academic year.
According to official data, the smart classroom initiative will cost โน127.57 crore, while the creation of hi-tech laboratories is estimated at โน159.06 crore. Together, these upgrades aim to make technology-driven education more accessible to students in rural and urban areas alike.
At present, 30,774 of Tamil Naduโs 37,626 government schools are already equipped with smart classrooms or digital labs. The new phase seeks to bridge the remaining digital gap, ensuring that all students benefit from interactive, multimedia-based learning environments.
Education Department officials stated that the move is part of the stateโs broader vision to integrate technology with pedagogy, enabling teachers to deliver lessons using digital content, simulations, and virtual experiments. The hi-tech labs will support STEM-focused learning and practical exposure in science and mathematics.
School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi noted that the project aligns with the State Education Policy and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasize experiential and technology-enabled learning. โOur goal is to make every government school digitally empowered and future-ready,โ he said.
Once completed, Tamil Nadu will be among the leading states in India with comprehensive digital infrastructure in over 99% of its government schools, setting a benchmark for inclusive technology integration in education.
