Chandigarh, November 6:
The Punjab government is planning to enhance student nutrition by introducing a breakfast provision of 150 grams of milk and one banana for children studying in government schools.
The initiative, under consideration by the School Education and Social Security departments, seeks to strengthen the existing Mid-Day Meal programme by ensuring that students begin their school day with a nutritious meal. Officials said that the proposal is in its final drafting stage and a pilot project may be launched in select districts before a state-wide rollout.
Education experts believe the move could improve attendance, focus, and learning outcomes, especially in rural and economically weaker areas. Once fully implemented, the scheme is expected to benefit nearly 20 lakh students across the state.
The proposal aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises holistic development, nutrition, and well-being as essential components of quality education.
