In a bid to strengthen school–community engagement and boost student enrolment, the Karnataka Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) has announced a statewide initiative to hold mega parent-teacher meetings (PTMs) across 47,000 government schools on Children’s Day, November 14.
The department said the drive aims to create stronger communication between schools and families, encouraging parents to take an active role in their children’s education. The PTMs will also serve as a platform to review student attendance, discuss learning outcomes, and identify support measures for academic improvement.
Officials stated that the meetings will include awareness sessions on government schemes, including incentives for girl education, midday meals, free textbooks, and digital learning resources. Local education officers have been instructed to ensure that school development and monitoring committees (SDMCs), teachers, and community leaders actively participate.
The initiative aligns with the state’s mission to enhance enrolment and retention, especially in rural areas where drop-out rates remain a concern. It is also part of the broader “Namma Shaale, Namma Koduge” (Our School, Our Contribution) campaign launched earlier to promote community ownership of schools.
Speaking about the event, a senior DSEL official said, “Children’s Day offers the perfect opportunity to celebrate students while engaging parents as key partners in education. These meetings will help bridge communication gaps and build trust between schools and families.”
The department has advised all block and cluster education officers to monitor implementation and report participation levels. Outcomes from the PTMs will be compiled at the district level to guide future policy interventions in parental engagement and school development.
