The Tamil Nadu government has taken a major step toward implementing its new State Education Policy (SEP) by constituting two high-level committees — an Expert Committee and a Design Committee — to oversee a comprehensive revamp of the school curriculum for Classes I to XII. The restructured curriculum is slated for rollout in the 2027–28 academic year.
According to the School Education Department, the committees will focus on modernizing syllabus content, assessment frameworks, and learning outcomes to align with contemporary needs and global standards. The move follows the state’s recent adoption of its SEP, which emphasizes holistic education, inclusive pedagogy, and digital integration.
The Expert Committee — comprising educationists, child psychologists, curriculum researchers, and domain experts — will guide the academic direction, ensuring that subjects are updated to include 21st-century skills, environmental awareness, and socio-emotional learning. The Design Committee will handle the structure, sequencing, and visual presentation of the new textbooks and learning materials.
Officials indicated that the upcoming curriculum reform will reflect Tamil Nadu’s unique linguistic and cultural context while integrating scientific temper, critical thinking, and technology-enabled learning.
Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said the reform aims to “create a learner-centered education system that prepares students for both higher studies and life skills.” He added that pilot modules and teacher training programs will begin in 2026 ahead of the statewide rollout.
This marks Tamil Nadu’s first full-scale curriculum revision since 2018, positioning the state among the few in India to implement a state-specific education policy and curriculum framework distinct from the national model.
