The Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings 2025 have been released, celebrating universities worldwide that are driving progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through research, education, and community engagement.
This yearโs edition features over 1,900 universities from 120 countries, highlighting a growing commitment in higher education to address global challenges such as climate action, gender equality, clean energy, and quality education.
According to THE, Western Sydney University (Australia) has once again secured the top global position, recognised for its exceptional performance in SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Other leading institutions include University of Manchester (UK), RMIT University (Australia), and Aalborg University (Denmark) โ all praised for integrating sustainability into research and institutional operations.
Asian universities also made a strong showing this year, with University of Tokyo, National University of Singapore, and Tsinghua University ranking among the top 50. India saw participation from over 90 universities, led by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Lovely Professional University, and KIIT University, each recognised for their work on clean energy and community development initiatives.
THEโs Chief Data Officer noted that the rankings reflect โhow universities are evolving beyond traditional measures of excellence to embrace their social and environmental responsibilities.โ The metrics assessed impact across 17 SDGs, using indicators such as outreach, stewardship, and partnerships for sustainable innovation.
Analysts observe that the rising participation of institutions from developing countries underscores the mainstreaming of sustainability in global academia, with universities increasingly aligning their missions to the SDG agenda.
