Dehradun, 4 November 2025 โ The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rain and snowfall across several hill districts of Uttarakhand on November 4 and 5, as a new western disturbance moves across the western Himalayas. The weather system is expected to bring relief from the prolonged dry spell but could also cause a notable drop in temperature across the northern hill state.
According to the IMDโs Dehradun center, light to moderate precipitation is likely in the districts of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh, and Bageshwar, while lower regions like Dehradun and Tehri may experience occasional light showers. The department has also cautioned that higher reaches above 3,000 meters could receive fresh snowfall, possibly affecting travel routes and mountain passes.
Temperature Drop and Travel Advisory
Meteorologists predict a 2โ3 ยฐC dip in minimum temperatures over the next 48 hours, with colder winds likely to sweep through central and western Uttarakhand. The IMD has issued an orange alert for hilly terrain, advising residents and tourists to stay updated on local forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel to high-altitude areas.
The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has instructed district administrations to remain on standby and ensure that snow-clearing machinery and emergency shelters are prepared in vulnerable zones.
Impact on Pilgrimage and Tourism
The weather alert comes as the region continues to host thousands of pilgrims for the tail end of the Char Dham Yatra. Authorities have requested yatris visiting Kedarnath and Badrinath to check conditions before travel and to be equipped for sudden weather changes.
Local tour operators said bookings for early-November treks in Valley of Flowers and Har Ki Dun may be temporarily affected, though the precipitation could rejuvenate mountain vegetation and benefit upcoming winter tourism.
Expert Commentary
โWestern disturbances at this time of year are not unusual,โ said Dr. Meenakshi Rawat, a senior IMD scientist. โHowever, the early arrival of snow in some upper Himalayan valleys could mark the onset of winter conditions earlier than normal.โ
Eduvista Daily Insight: The upcoming spell of rain and snow may refresh water sources and aid in winter sowing across the foothills. Still, travelers and locals should exercise caution as mountain routes may become slippery and visibility could drop sharply.
