NAAC Grants One-Year Extension to Universities Pending Accreditation Renewal Amid New Framework Transition
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has announced a one-year extension for higher education institutions whose accreditation validity has recently expired, providing temporary relief as the council works to finalize a new accreditation framework aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
According to the NAACโs latest directive, the extension applies to universities and colleges awaiting reassessment or those unable to complete the process due to changes in evaluation parameters and digital submission systems. This interim measure is intended to ensure institutional continuity and regulatory compliance while the council modernizes its procedures.
The upcoming framework, currently under consultation with the University Grants Commission (UGC) and other academic bodies, is expected to emphasize data transparency, student outcomes, research quality, and institutional governance through a more dynamic and technology-driven evaluation model.
A senior NAAC official stated that the new system aims to make accreditation โmore inclusive, outcome-oriented, and globally benchmarked,โ with artificial intelligence and automation integrated into report analysis and peer review mechanisms.
Experts in higher education have welcomed the move, noting that the temporary extension prevents disruptions in university operations, especially in areas like funding eligibility, admissions, and international collaborations, all of which require valid accreditation status.
