PM-YASASVI Scheme Offers Comprehensive Financial Support for Top-Class Higher Education

₹2.00 Lakhs Annually for OBC, EBC, and DNT Students at Premier Institutions

NEW DELHI – The PM-YASASVI Scheme (Prime Minister’s Young Achievers Scholarship Award Scheme for Vibrant India) has been reaffirmed as a pivotal Central Sector initiative aimed at breaking financial barriers for meritorious students from socio-economically disadvantaged communities. The scheme provides robust financial assistance to students belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBC), Economically Backward Classes (EBC), and De-notified, Nomadic, and Semi-Nomadic Tribes (DNT) to pursue their higher education at India’s most recognized institutions.

Financial Support Breakdown and Scope

Implemented by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, the program is specifically designed to recognize merit by covering the full cost of education at notified institutions.

Key financial provisions under the “Top Class College Education” sub-scheme include:

  • Tuition and Fees: Full reimbursement of tuition fees and non-refundable charges up to a ceiling of ₹2.00 lakhs per annum per student for public sector institutions (and up to ₹3.72 lakhs for specialized courses like Commercial Pilot Training).
  • Living Expenses: A monthly allowance of ₹3,000 (₹36,000 per annum) for living expenses.
  • Study Materials: An annual grant of ₹5,000 for books and stationery.
  • One-time Computer Grant: Up to ₹45,000 as one-time assistance for the purchase of a computer/laptop and accessories during the course.

The total annual assistance ensures that selected students can dedicate themselves entirely to their studies without the burden of financial stress.

Eligibility and Application Process

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must have secured admission to a full-time course in one of the 300+ notified ‘Top Class’ institutions—which includes premier institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and top universities (view a list of previously included institutions here).

The key eligibility criteria are:

  • Belonging to the OBC, EBC, or DNT category.
  • The total annual family income from all sources must not exceed ₹2.50 lakhs.
  • The benefit is limited to two siblings in a family (this restriction does not apply to girl students).

Merit remains the central selection criterion, historically determined either through a national entrance test (YET – which was cancelled in some recent cycles) or, currently, based on the merit list of the admission entrance examination for the course. Students must apply for the scholarship through the government’s unified platform, the [suspicious link removed].

This comprehensive scheme plays a crucial role in enhancing access and ensuring that India’s diverse talent pool can realize its full potential at the nation’s academic zenith.
