Rajasthan Launches ‘Khushi Shala’ Programme to Support Mental Health and Emotional Well-Being in Primary Schools

— Initiative integrates mindfulness, teacher training, and mobile resources for holistic student development

Jaipur | November 10, 2025

The Government of Rajasthan has launched the “Khushi Shala” mental-health programme to promote emotional well-being and resilience among students in Classes 1 to 5 across government schools. The initiative marks a pioneering step in integrating structured mental-health education and mindfulness practices into the primary school curriculum.

Focus on Early Emotional Development

The Khushi Shala programme introduces daily classroom exercises that help children recognise and express emotions, build empathy, and develop focus. Activities include mindfulness breathing, guided reflections, and emotion-based storytelling, designed to strengthen psychological resilience from an early age.

Teachers across participating schools are receiving specialised training to identify signs of stress or anxiety among children and use positive classroom techniques to foster safe and inclusive learning environments.

Digital and Community Resources

A key feature of the programme is its emphasis on accessibility. The Education Department has developed mobile-friendly digital handbooks and teacher resource kits that can be used both online and offline, especially in rural and semi-urban areas. These materials simplify the integration of emotional-learning practices into daily lessons.

Officials from the School Education Department of Rajasthan noted that the initiative is being rolled out in phases, beginning with pilot districts before state-wide adoption. The approach aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasis on social-emotional learning (SEL) as a core component of foundational education.

Collaborative Support and Monitoring

The programme has been developed with support from mental-health experts, psychologists, and child development specialists, ensuring that the curriculum is both age-appropriate and culturally sensitive. Regular impact assessments will monitor changes in student engagement, classroom climate, and teacher well-being.

Education officials said that Khushi Shala aims to “create happier classrooms where children feel safe, seen, and supported — not just academically, but emotionally.”
