Thane School Cultivates Green Learning: Students Take Up Farming and Environmental Studies

In a refreshing blend of classroom learning and real-world experience, a school in Thane has introduced hands-on agricultural and environmental awareness lessons for its middle school students. The initiative allows students of Classes 8 and 9 to participate directly in paddy harvesting and sustainable farming practices, transforming the school grounds and nearby fields into open-air learning laboratories.

The programme, launched under the school’s environmental education drive, aims to build ecological sensitivity, respect for farming communities, and awareness of food sustainability among urban children.

Learning Beyond Textbooks

Students take part in every stage of the farming process — from preparing soil and planting saplings to harvesting crops and learning about water conservation and organic composting. Teachers say the goal is to “connect students with nature” and help them understand the link between climate, food security, and sustainable living.

“When children experience farming firsthand, they grasp the importance of farmers’ work, natural resources, and the impact of human actions on the environment,” said a science teacher involved in the programme.

The school has partnered with local farmers and environmental educators to guide the sessions, ensuring that traditional agricultural wisdom meets modern sustainability concepts.

A Model for Experiential Learning

The initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages experiential and multidisciplinary learning, including exposure to local culture, crafts, and ecology.

Activities under the programme include:

  • Paddy and vegetable cultivation in small school plots
  • Workshops on rainwater harvesting, waste segregation, and composting
  • Study projects on soil health and biodiversity
  • Awareness drives on reducing food waste and promoting eco-friendly practices

Students are also maintaining observation journals and preparing presentations to showcase what they’ve learned through direct engagement rather than rote study.

Cultivating a Sustainable Mindset

Teachers report that the initiative has improved student participation, teamwork, and curiosity about environmental issues. Parents, too, have expressed appreciation for the practical skills their children are acquiring.

The school plans to expand the programme to younger grades next year and introduce an “Eco Club” to organise plantation drives and inter-school sustainability contests.
