UK Manufacturing Rebounds as JLR Resumes Operations After Cyber Shutdown

November 4, 2025

London: The United Kingdom’s manufacturing sector has staged a sharp rebound, hitting a one-year high in early November, as Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) resumed full operations following last month’s major cyber-attack that had temporarily halted production.

According to data published on Monday by the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) and industry tracker S&P Global, the Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 52.4, its strongest level since late 2024. The recovery has been largely attributed to pent-up output from the automotive and industrial equipment sectors, as well as improved domestic order flows.

JLR, Britain’s largest car manufacturer, restored normal operations across its key plants in Solihull, Halewood, and Nitra, ending a two-week suspension triggered by a ransomware attack that disrupted supply chains and software systems. The company said it has now strengthened its cybersecurity infrastructure and resumed full-scale exports.

Economists see the rebound as a sign that the UK industrial base may be stabilizing, following months of sluggish growth and energy-related headwinds. “This is a confidence boost for British manufacturing,” said Emma Richards, chief economist at the London Institute of Industrial Studies. “The JLR recovery shows how critical the auto sector remains to the wider economy.”

While the UK shows signs of industrial resilience, the U.S. manufacturing sector continues to struggle, weighed down by ongoing trade tariffs and supply-chain disruptions tied to new import duties. The divergence underscores a potential shift in the global industrial cycle, with Europe’s recovery gaining traction as the U.S. grapples with policy-driven headwinds.

Market analysts warn, however, that sustainability of the UK’s rebound will depend on inflation stability, energy prices, and trade dynamics post-2025.
